Bombus sonomae Howard, L. O. (1901). The Insect Book. New York: Doubleday, Page 1st Edn xxvii+429 pp. [plate 2, fig. 7] (This name has been attributed to Howard, as it appeared on plate 2 (fig. 7) of his book 'The Insect Book', whose first edition dates of 1901. A description and information on the type series were provided for the first time by Franklin (1913:133)) .
Type data: lectotype USNM 24114 <F>.
Subsequent designation: Franklin, H. J. (1913). The Bombidae of the New World. Trans. Am. Entomol. Soc. 39: 73-200 [133] .
Type locality: Mexico, Chihuahua, 'head of Rio Piedras Verdes (six miles south of Colonia Garcia), Sierra Madre of western Chihuahua- about 7, 000 feet altitude'.

Nearctic Region: Mexico (Chihuahua, Distrito Federal, Durango, Guanajuato, México); Neotropical Region: Mexico (Morelos, Puebla)
