Euglossa (Eulema) auriceps Friese, H. (1899). Monographie der Bienengattung Euglossa Latr. Termeszetr. Fuz. 22: 117-172 [156] .
Type data: holotype whereabouts unknown <M> (Moure (1967:406) stated that the holotype was deposited in the AMNH collection. On the other hand, Kimsey (1982:88) gave the USNM collection as the depository, information repeated in Moure et al. (2007:215). Nemésio (2009:30) reported on failed attempts to locate the type specimen in both of these collections, as well as in the ZMB. According to Moure's unpublished notes (May 9, 1957), a male from Asunción, Paraguay, found by him in the AMNH (under the number 26522), was interpreted as the holotype. Considering all this confusion, the type specimen is here left with whereabouts unknown (G. A. R. Melo, unpubl.)).
Type locality: Paraguay, Asunción.

Remarks

The systematics of the melanic forms in the mussitans group, which could be referred as the auriceps subgroup, is far from resolved. Most authors, including Kimsey (1982), have mistakenly treated Eufriesea violascens as a member of this group and employed this name for many different species. Moure (1976:284) restudied the type material and recognized the distinctness of E. violascens proper from E. auriceps and related forms. However, he did not position E. violascens within the genus. Study of the lectotype, during a recent visit to the DZMG collection, revealed that E. violascens is similar to E. buchwaldi, perhaps the two names being synonymous. The recognition by Moure (1999) of additional melanic species in the mussitans group, as E. fuscatra, E. nordestina, and E. velutina, improved the situation to some degree, but the entire group needs a thorough revision, since many additional undescribed forms remain (G. A. R. Melo, unpubl.).
