Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

Rocha-Filho, L. C. & Packer, L. (2015). Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C. (Rhinocoelioxys) Mitchell (Hymenoptera; Megachilidae) with the description of one new species. Zootaxa 3941 (2): 151-203 [182]

Remarks

Rocha-Filho & Packer (2015: 182) have synonymized several available names in Coelioxys under a single taxon C. zapoteca arguing that the differences in the shape of the female clypeus represent variation within a single species. Except for C. angustivalva, this synonymy is provisionally being followed here. Further investigation is necessary considering variation in other characters, as length of eye pilosity and other details of the clypeus. Future studies might reveal between 3 to 4 closely related species associated with the main biogeographic subregions of the Neotropical region.

Distribution

Neotropical Region: Argentina (Buenos Aires, Entre Rios, Formosa, Misiones, Salta, Tucumán), Belize, Bolivia (Cochabamba, El Beni, La Paz, Santa Cruz, Tarija), Brazil (Amazonas, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pará, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, São Paulo), Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico (Chiapas, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Tabasco, Veracruz), Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru (Cuzco, Junín, Lima, Madre de Dios), Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela
